Conflict & Power
Power as a Relational Tool
According to Guerrero (2011), "Power is always a relational concept; one individual cannot be dominant without someone else being submissive."(CP1) In the Lannister family tree, a trait that goes from the eldest generations to the youngest is their desire to be in control and have power. One relationship that is in constant flux is between Cersei and her son Jeoffery. Jeoffery is the King of the entire kingdom, but Cersei is his mother. Jeoffery, on occasion, will pull the "king" card just to put his mother in her place. While Cersei will do the exact same thing with the "mother' card. They are always bickering trying to gain the upper hand. They understand that whoever has the power position of this relationship is the most powerful person in the kingdom.
Yielding
Although power is a large theme in Westeros, there are still individuals who put other people first. "People who use this style forgo their own goals and desires in consideration of the partner"(CP2) As the queen of Winterfell, Katelyn Stark not only has to support her husband, but also her six children. As much as she wants to go and visit her family, and take some time to herself. She has an entire kingdom to look after. She has to raise children in a time of war and hostility. When her eldest son wants to go and avenge his fathers death. she must follow him to the ends of earth in his support, even with children back at home. She is forced to Yield all of her needs and desires in order to help out the people she loves.
