5 Stages of Death
In Westeros citizens have mastered the art of coping with death. According to Kubler Ross, there are five stages of death, "Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance."(ELG1) A death that rocks the whole kingdom is the murder of Eddard Stark. He has a very large family that all must cope with the loss of a loved one. They are in utter denial when the news first reaches them. It is hard for the children to comprehend what has happened to their father. The men of the family then move into a state of pure anger. Robb actually starts a war over this murder. While the children are angry, Mrs. Stark is bargaining with god to return her beloved husband to her, she misses him so much and does not know if she can move on without him. While she slowly slips into a depression that she never escapes from, the children are finally able to accept what has happened to their father. This experience, although traumatic, makes them stronger individuals and will essentially save their lives in the months to come.
Adulthood and Involvement
One problem that all families face as they grow up together is involvement. A parent getting too involved with a child. A child getting too involved with a parent. And everything in-between. According to Leslie Nussle, "when their (elders) suggestions are not followed they may feel they are no longer being respected."(ELG2) The young King Jeoffery is ruling the kingdom. This is a large task for any individual, let alone a teenager. That is why his mother is constantly chirping in his ear, trying to tell him how to do his job. This creates a large amount of animosity among high ranking officials. They believe she is way to0 involved and is clouding king Jeoffery's judgement and ability to lead his people. Her over involvement is ultimately what will cause the kingdom to come unraveled.
